Brought to you by: Fugitive Productions

Event Details

Combining the sounds of jazz and gypsy music, 440 expands on the tradition of gypsy jazz established by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, performing irresistible toe-tapping snappy arrangements of swing-era hot jazz standards as well as originals.

Tomoko Iwamoto started playing the violin at age six and soon became one of the most advanced students in her Suzuki studio. Later in life, Tomoko performed with groups representing styles from classical, to rock, to pop, to jazz, to world music — demonstrating a great sense of improvisation. She has provided arrangements and performed as a soloist with the Mood Swings Orchestra (jazz big band), and written many arrangements for the Newton All-City Orchestra. Tomoko continues to perform classical violin with the Plymouth Philharmonic, the Lexington Symphony, the New England Philharmonic, and the Woodvale String Quartet, just to name a few.

Mark Chenevert is a clarinet and tenor sax player with richly varied musical experience in alt-rock, jazz, Americana, classical, polka, cabaret, klezmer, second-line, and beyond. He has been a sought after side man in the Boston freelancing scene for years, performing with Willie Alexander, Chandler Travis, Doo-wop DeVille, Josh Lederman, Bertrand Laurence, Zoe Lewis, David Champagne, the Hot Tamale Brass Band, and others. Notable groups with which he performed in the past include Limbo Race, the Del Fuegos, and Hypnotic Clambake. Mark can be heard on dozens of recordings by these and other artists.

Jim Guttmann (replacing bassist Sven Larson today) has performed in a wide range of venues from smokey dives to Carnegie Hall. He is a bassist of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and has performed and recorded with Itzhak Perlman and Joel Grey. He is a founding member of the Really Eclectic String Quartet and has worked with nationally renowned entertainers and musicians, including Eartha Kitt, Mark Murphy, Johnny Shines, James Cotton, Matt Glaser, Russ Barenberg and the Artie Shaw Band. Jim is a Grammy Award Nominee and the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant to study the arco solo tradition in jazz bass playing. He currently serves as Managing Director of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and the President of the Klezmer Conservatory Foundation.

Jack Soref is a guitarist who specializes in playing and teaching music in the style of Django Reinhardt. Jack has performed throughout the US as well as France, Canada, and Scotland. He began studying the guitar as a teen with Madison-based Jazz Mandolinist and guitarist Sims Delaney-Pothoff. In 2003, Jack moved to Boston to attend the Berklee College of Music. While living in Paris in 2011, Jack jammed with many talented musicians including the legendary guitarist Boulou Ferré and violinist Florin Niculescu. He can be seen regularly in the greater Boston area playing Django's music, with a myriad of local musicians.
