Johnny Hoy & The Bluefish bring their sometimes soulful, sometimes raunchy take on a great smorgasbord of classics — Chicago Blues, Rockabilly, Rock’n’Roll, Country, Swing, good old R&B, and a bit of Cajun flavored off beat stuff — to Sanctuary in Maynard. This is a dance band from start to finish. Formed in 1991 and based in on Martha’s Vineyard, the band has released five CDs and performed around the world — as far as South Africa and Norway.
JOHNNY juggles a full life where he takes advantage of his many skills including stone masonry, fishing, antique dealing, farming. Somehow he manages to do all the gigs as well. He came to the Island in 1978, after soaking up Muddy Waters’ and Tom Waits’ shows as a teenager.
JEREMY BERLIN, the piano player has been with the band since the summer of ’93. He’s played duets with Bill Clinton and Carly Simon and toured the world with The Nina Simone Band. He’s not afraid of anything — and he plays it all. Jeremy’s right has plays the keyboard. His left hand plays the bass line, as the band has no bass player. (PS You’d never know.)
DELANIE PICKERING arrived on Martha’s Vineyard in her van at the age of 20, and for the first few months, didn’t tell anyone she played guitar. Now 22, she plays with everyone and joined the band in 2018. A powerhouse blues player, she has the tone and authenticity of a seasoned performer and sings that way too.
KEVIN MEDEIROS, originally from New Bedford, came to hear the band for many years as a young drummer learning his craft. When his turn came, he was ready, and his musical sensibility and attitude are a great addition. He and Delanie sling coffee by day and hit the stage hard together at night.
