FEATURING JOHNNY BLUE HORN

Starting in February, the Sanctuary stage will be hosting a band of Boston music legends on the first Thursday of the month, featuring a guest all-star. In February, we’ll be featuring Johnny Blue Horn.

Anyone who hears keyboardist and singer Joe Bargar, with his Soul Providers band, knows that he is the closest thing vocally to Otis Redding we’re ever likely to hear in these parts. He uses his extraordinary voice to put an unexpected twist on standard swing. The Soul Providers treat audiences to a rousing set of authentic Rhythm and Blues that can’t be beat. It’s an all-star rhythm and blues lineup that includes gifted sidemen who’ve backed everyone from James Cotton to Dr. John.

Joe Bargar is a veteran of the New England music scene. Having grown up in Providence, RI, Joe had the opportunity to appear with such legendary acts as Roomful of Blues, Scott Hamilton, Duke Robillard, James Montgomery, and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Living in New York City for decades, Joe played with performers including Sly &The Family Stone, Robbie Robertson, blues greats Otis Rush, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Son Seals, and John Lee Hooker; and soul masters Percy Sledge, Clarence Carter, and Solomon Burke. He can also be heard on several recordings, including those by Diana Ross and "Late Show" bandleader Paul Shaeffer.

Featured perfomer Johnny Blue Horn has entertained countless fans of music in the region for more than 25 years. Both a trumpeter and vocalist, he performs a varied range of musical styles, from gritty Memphis R&B to rhythmic New Orleans second-line jazz; from swingin' Kansas City blues to heartfelt '70s soul. Johnny was a member of Roadhouse Sheiks, Mission of Blues — a Boston Blues Challenge first place winner — Chicken Slacks, Drive All Night, The Crime, and Push It Good. As a side man, he’s performed with The Love Dogs, Diane Blue, The Brew, the Hot Tamale Brass Band, Ricky "King" Russell, Danny Banks, "Sax Gordon" Beadle, Chris Fitz, Geoff Bartley, Matthew Stubbs, among many others.
