YARINA was founded in 1984 by José Manuel Cachimuel and Rosa Elena Amaguaña who were motivated by the need to amplify the voices of the indigenous people of Ecuador. Their three eldest children — Roberto, Manuel, and Rimay (ages 10, 12, and 15 at the time) — were each given a role to play in the ensemble. Through music, the family would reach a wider audience and open a vital dialogue regarding human rights and representation.
Today at 11 siblings strong, the group continues to leads the way in the world of Ecuadorian music where Yarina is a household name. Officially named indigenous cultural ambassadors of Ecuador in 2002, they still follow their original mission statement with passion and commitment .
Their songs of love, community, and social justice feature a variety of traditional Andean instruments, including the bandolín and charango (small box lutes), rondador/sampoña/pakllas (a variety of South American reed pipes), and kena (end-blown flute). Along with guitar, violin, bass, drums, and vocals, Yarina’s music unapologetically radiates into the world as a wash of sonic sunshine.
They have received countless awards, accolades, and performance opportunities for their work: Best World Music Album (Native American Music Awards 2004), Best Folk Music Album (Indian Summer Music Awards 2004), Pequot Museum (2008), Lincoln Center NYC (2008), Kennedy Center (DC 2007), Smithsonian Museum (NY, DC 2007), Teatro Nacional Sucre (Quito, Ecuador 2021) — and performing at major festivals in front tens of thousands of peopleacross the US and Ecuador.
